Last year for Christmas my husband took me to see this man on Broadway:
Actually it was my idea. I handed him the ad and said, “Here’s my Christmas present dear.”
He also once took me to see this man in “The Tempest.”
That was one of the highlights of my life.
So it’s probably not shocking to hear that these men are now always on my mind.
As my mother once said – in fact, it was when I revealed my crush on Jean-Luc Picard, “I guess it’s true what they say. The brain is the ultimate aphrodisiac.”
I thought she was mistaken. Patrick Stewart is HOT.
But my sons are obsessed with Mythbusters and we’re talking about them all the time because everything they do on the show has real-world applications. Literally on a daily basis we can say, “They did that!” or find our own myths to bust. We can be doing something as simple as taking a walk in the woods or even driving in the car and remember something they proved or disproved. (AND Dave just admitted to his crush on The Hyneman.)
I love these (geeky, inappropriate, socially awkward) men because they’ve got my boys thinking. They’re teaching them about science and creativity and using logic to think of ways to solve problems, and of course how to build anything out of stuff you have lying around. And they’re funny and doofy and really excited about science. I want my kids to have that interest in the world and level of excitement in finding out how things work.
Unfortunately I have no building or creating skills but luckily I can pass some of it off to my father, who takes my son down into his shop and makes what’s in his mind come to life. Now when he sees a tool on the show he’ll say, “Grandpa has that saw!”
Never fear: I might love me some science geeks and dark characters and intergalactic heroes, but I’m only human. For the few people left who don’t know who my true movie boyfriend is, here’s a clue. And he’s MINE, Louis CK.
If you don’t want to click the link, it’s Ewan McGregor (well, he actually has been an intergalactic hero, come to think of it). And believe it or not, to complete the circle of men I love, my husband and I just saw Louis CK on stage too. But we both have a crush on him, because as my friend said, “He could be the smartest and funniest man on the planet.” Ah, the brain. My favorite aphrodisiac.
