I see London, I see France; I see Barbie’s… bustier?
You don’t have to imagine my surprise to discover that Saskia’s Pink Princess Barbie wears lingerie. I wrote all about it on Kveller.
Her bustier really gets in the way of all my childhood memories, which all seemed to involve naked Barbie.
In the essay, I mention that I tried the good old Google method to learn whether all new Barbies have undergarments, only to come up short. Google giveth, sure, but Google takeths away, too. You never, ever know. It’s a mystery of modern day life, the good Google search versus the bum Google search. So, I also wrote to Mattel. I was certain that my outlandish question would not merit a response.
Amazingly, I was wrong:

Some Barbie dolls have undergarments molded onto the plastic, and some do not. There is no way for us to tell which dolls have the mold or not. Sorry!??Some great resources that might help you out are magazines and books about doll collecting that can be found at your local library or bookstore. And of course you can always look online to search the internet.??We hope you continue to enjoy Barbie® for years to come!

Friends have assured me that Saskia will find ways to deface or otherwise muss up Barbie’s inner-come-hitherness. I imagine they are correct; Barbie’s adventures with Saskia have really just begun.
