Springfield’s Alliance to Develop Power is looking for supporters’ help as it competes for a large prize that would help its job-creation programs.
ADP is one of 74 non-profits from around the country competing for part of a $250,000 prize from the Skoll Foundation. The “JobRaising Challenge,” which is also sponsored by the Huffington Post and the on-line fundraising group CrowdRise, gives the groups until March 1 to raise donations. Each financial threshold they hit along the way wins them some free publicity and other support via the HuffPost (raise $5,000 and Arianna Huffington will tweet about your group to her 1.1 million followers; raise $20,000 and you’ll receive free consulting services from Impact founder Brian Sirgutz).
ADP, a member-driven organization with projects around the Valley, has several job-creation programs, including its United for Hire cooperative landscaping business; a summer jobs program that hires teens to work at one of ADP’s housing cooperatives and also receive leadership training; and a worker center that offers a legal clinic and links members to ESL, adult ed and other classes.
As of this morning, ADP was in the #22 spot on the JobRaising Challenge leader board, having raised $1,031 since the competition opened on Jan. 21. That’s enough to earn ADP one HuffPost Impact tweet about the group, but still leaves a lot of ground for the group to cover to catch up with the chart-busting leader, New York’s Venture for America, a sort of Teach for America for budding entrepreneurs that matches new college grads with start-up companies; at least count, that group has raised a whopping $64,589.
