With the election just two weeks away and polling numbers fairly close, last night’s Springfield debate between Senate candidates Gabriel Gomez and Ed Markey was a big deal.
If you missed it, well, I’m not sure what to say. It doesn’t appear that WGBY, which hosted the debate, plans to re-air it, and somehow, in this age of hyper-documentation, I can’t find a video of it to link to—at least, not yet.
Still, there are plenty of places you can find local rehashes of the debate: Western Mass Politics & Insight live-tweeted the event. The Republican’s Patrick Johnson covered the reaction of Markey supporters at McCaffrey’s Public House, while Jack Flynn spoke to Gomez fans gathered at Samuel’s Bar and Tavern; not surprisingly, each group was pretty confident that their guy has won the debate.
In fact, I’d say the most spontaneous line in the local coverage came from the union carpenter quoted in the Republican’s pre-debate coverage, who presumably went off script when he told reporter Shira Schoenberg that he was there holding a Markey sign “because the union asked him to,” and added that his preferred candidate was U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, who lost to Markey in the Democratic primary.
Oh, and the Boston Globe covered the debate, too, although you have to get past a pay-wall and endless Tim Tebow and Whitey Bulger coverage to find it. Presumably, that paper will give more attention to President Obama’s visit to Roxbury today to stump for Markey.
