It’s been great seeing the defending World Series Champion Boston Red Sox return to the field this week, taking two of three from Baltimore on the strength of a great bullpen and some nice at bats from the young and promising Bradley and Bogaerts. But something feels off about the season so far, and I’m not referring to Big Papi’s Samsung selfie with President Obama, or Johnny Gomes’ Stars and Stripes suit. I’m talking about longtime color commentator Jerry Remy, who returns to the booth after taking extended time off last season following his son’s murder of his girlfriend in front of their 5-year-old daughter, Jerry Remy’s granddaughter.
Admittedly, I haven’t followed the case extensively. I haven’t read the big article in the Boston Globe last week. And I’m not judging Remy on whether or not he should continue to support his son, pay for a top lawyer, and so forth (not here anyway). But I won’t be able to watch the Sox this season while hearing Remy’s voice without constantly thinking about the horrific incident that his son is in jail for, and all of the other incidents leading up to it which went largley unnoticed, and largely unreported. And I’m suprised the ever-image-conscious John Henry and his Red Sox ownership group don’t feel the same way.
Could be a good summer for baseball on the radio.
