The very stunning and sad news that Chris Cavallari passed away quite suddenly last week left our community reeling. She was a third generation owner of Serio’s Market, which she ran with her husband, Gary Golec.
People just showed up Monday and probably all week simply to hug Gary. I came that morning with a note in hand. It was a bear hug, a hug for dear life, a hug that I kept all week. It comforted me, too.
Life in a little city means that sometimes the losses are shared in a way to make them feel both personal—to the family, the close friends—and also communal. Chris not only greeted us and checked us out at the register she welcomed us into her place—an extension of home, if you will. My friend Megan wrote about Chris on her blog. It’s such a tribute you are bound to feel sad even if you don’t live here—and warmed up in your heart, too.
