Dance, Muse

In a show billed as “dance, Greek mythology and fractals,” Kristin Wold of Shakespeare & Company takes a break from the Bard of Avon to dip into the Homeric one. Thetis: Immortal Fire is a dance piece about the mother of Achilles, who famously dipped her infant son into a fire, or alternatively the River Styx, to make him invulnerable, but neglected to immunize his little heel. She’s a sea nymph — a shape-shifter and a creature of the natural world.

Wold, who played Anne Hathaway in last summer’s memorable Shakespeare’s Will, says that in Thetis she’s “exploring the tension between divinity and humanity, between order and chaos.” She’s inspired by fractals, those repeating patterns found promiscuously in nature and intuitively in music, for “the beauty and order they represent in what can seem to be a chaotic world.” The piece is performed by S&Co company members including Susannah Millonzi and Josh McCabe, with original music by Alexander Sovronsky.

Dec. 20, 5 p.m., Shakespeare & Company, 70 Kemble St., Lenox, $10-$20. (413) 637-3353, shakespeare.org.
