Gas prices haven’t been this low in nearly a decade, and many people in the Valley are downright giddy about it.

At its highest point in the last decade, July 2008, regular gasoline was about $4.03 per gallon at the pump. At that price, filling an 18-gallon tank cost $72.54. But last week we saw gas prices in the Valley around $2.03. At that rate, filling up the same tank would only cost $36.54 — a savings of $36!

I went with a photographer to see what people are doing with the extra cash. A lot of people said they’re using the money to pay down debt and bills, while others are shopping more, going out and traveling.

At a hopping F.L. Roberts on Memorial Avenue in West Springfield, prices were low — $2.03 a gallon — and enthusiasm was high.
