If you’ve ever studied the backgrounds of selfies for a hint of what the subject’s life is really about, then Portraits: Revealing & Concealing may be of particular interest to you. The manner in which people choose to represent themselves in pictures, paint, words, pencil, etc. provide fascinating glimpses into the human desire to create a specific image for one’s self — and the shortcomings that are either acknowledged or ignored in achieving that goal. This theme is explored by 40 local artists in the Deerfield Arts Bank’s most recent exhibit. One question the Arts Bank is seeking to evoke is, When we paint a portrait, what are we trying to reveal about the subject and what is left hidden? At its heart, the show is about who people want to be and the reckoning that entails.

Through Jan. 1, 2016, Deerfield Arts Bank, 3 Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield, (413) 665-0123.
