“Madonna” is the Italian name for the Christian Virgin Mary, but the phrase has taken on a life aside from Jesus’ mom. Madonna has become synonymous with maternal domesticity … and the other Madonna, the Material Girl, of course. Amherst native Misa Chappell began The Madonna project in February of 2015 as a cathartic and contemplative practice. The brightly painted, shimmering women in her Ray of Light exhibit have an ethereal omnipotence that is compelling to behold.
