Drawing monsters has been my favorite ever since I was small — it always made me feel better when I was down. I’m not sure what it is about skulls that fascinates me. Maybe it’s because they’re not something you see very often and look like mythological toothy beasts. Look at an elephant skull — it looks nothing like an elephant. It looks like a terrifying awesome monster.

So this emerges: seven hours straight, done by Jesse Levitt at Off the Map Tattoo  in Easthampton. The design itself was custom-drawn by the artist. I explained to him that I wanted the skull of a monster (extra eye sockets, gnarly teeth, etc) and he actually free-hand drew it on with markers, so it would organically fit the twigginess of my arm.•
