Hometown Girl

Mary Chapin Carpenter didn’t like that Columbia Records marketed her from day one as a country singer, but it was just that emphasis on grit, soul, and storytelling that sold her to the world. Carpenter went quadruple platinum with her 1992 album Come On, Come On, and she’s been goin’ on ever since, collaborating over the years with the likes of Joan Baez, Cyndi Lauper, Dolly Parton, and the Indigo Girls. She’s recorded 14 albums, sold over 14 million records, and has won five Grammy Awards. Her latest album, The Things That We Are Made Of, comes out in May. Rolling Stone writes that the new album “finds the songwriter at her most thoughtful and also at times sweetly whimsical, perfectly capturing the buoyant spirit of her early successes and also serving as a reminder that she remains one of the most grounded, sentient songwriters of her generation.”
