Airing the  Ancestors

Aretha Aoki’s ghost hunting involves no special equipment. To do it, she turns inward. What she finds is the focus of her latest work: New. The Vermont Performance Lab partners with The School for Contemporary Dance and Thought in Northampton to present a work-in-progress look at Aoki’s art, for which she has teamed up with visual and sound artist Ryan MacDonald on a musical text-and-movement piece that draws on her Japanese heritage, family stories, and memories. The result, she says, provides “a medium for the residue of family history.”

New by Aretha Aoki, in collaboration with Ryan MacDonald. April 29 at 7 p.m. $10. The School For Contemporary Dance and Thought, 25 Main St. 4th floor, Northampton.  (413) 695-1799.
