Teatro Folklórico

The annual Summer Spectacle by Double Edge Theatre always delivers on its name — in years past, the multi-talented troupe has brought magic and myth to life through song, on stilts, silks, ropes, and trapeze, in fields, in the streets, underwater, behind masks, and with bells on. But there’s method to the madness: the theater company always seeks to share a story that resonates personally and politically.

This year is no different: Double Edge is mounting a refined staging of last year’s Once a Blue Moon — Cada Luna Azul, an original play about the people of the fictional town pf Agua Santa, inspired by magic realism and Latin American stories, including Alejandro Jodorowski’s Where the Bird Sings Best, Isabel Allende’s Eva Luna, writings by Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and poetry by Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz. It is a story of memory, culture, and song, where the dialogue is as important as the physical stunts. Call it your local cirque du soirée — a gathering that asks you to get lost, get in touch, and connect with something bigger than yourself (stilts not included).

Once a Blue Moon — Cada Luna Azul: Previews July 15-17; performances July 20 to Aug. 22, Wednesday to Sunday at 8 p.m. Double Edge Theatre, 948 Conway Road, Ashfield. (413) 628-0277, doubleedgetheatre.org.
