The Opera that Made Verdi a Household Name … in 1840
Nabucco is a seminal opera — the one that put the august Giuseppe Verdi on the map — that follows the plight of Jewish people as they are assaulted, conquered, and subsequently exiled from their homeland by Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, aka “Nabucco.” Sung in Italian, the opera is three hours long and includes one of the most famous operatic choruses of all time: the “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves,” Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate, “Fly, thought, on golden wings.” Get moved this Saturday and catch a live screening of this opera performed at the Met and featuring legendary tenor Plácido Domingo.
