In a time when access to healthcare is a pressing concern for many, it isn't out of place to wonder what we would do to get it. Moliere's play The Imaginary Invalid takes a comedic look at this question with a hypochondriac father who seeks to marry his daughter off to a boring but well-connected doctor, thereby ensuring himself free healthcare for life. Unfortunately, the daughter has fallen for someone else, and it takes the sharp-eyed maid to sort through tangled family loyalties and fraudulent doctors' advice before reaching a conclusion.
The play is directed by UMass-Amherst MFA candidate Dora Arreola. A panel discussion about translation and adaptation in theater takes place at 6:30 p.m. in the UMass-Amherst Fine Arts Center before the Dec. 11 show.
