As of January, 26,527 residents of the metro Springfield area (or 7.9 percent of the population) were unemployed, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While that’s better than it had been— last summer, the rate hit 8.5 percent—it’s still higher than both the state average of 6.8 percent and the national average of 6.6 percent.
Today, a free program at the Springfield Central Library aims to lower that rate. The “Let’s Get to Work, Springfield” fair, which runs from 1 to 7:30 p.m., will includes a job fair (from 3 to 5 p.m.), an opportunity to have your resume reviewed by staff from FutureWorks, information about degree programs at Springfield Technical Community College, programs on dressing for interviews, workshops on computer skills for job hunting, and other resources, including ones geared specifically toward veterans and homeless mothers.
