It’s been six months since the freak tornado hit the city. The Maple High Six Corners Neighborhood Council will mark the date with a candlelight vigil “honoring the spirit and resiliency” of that neighborhood, which was hit especially hard.
The vigil will take place, rain or shine, Thursday, Dec. 1, at 5 p.m. at the Pine and Central streets triangle.
Meanwhile, ReBuild Springfield—the public/private group charged with “leading a collaborative planning process to build a community vision for the future of the tornado impacted neighborhoods and Springfield as a whole”—will hold a new series of community meetings later in the month.
“Residents and stakeholders are urged to help create a vision for Springfield that will ultimately help form the master plan for both the tornado-impacted and related areas of the City of Springfield,” ReBuild Springfield says. “We need to hear, firsthand, from a diverse array of residents from the impacted neighborhoods as well as the City at large.” Take them up on that.
Those meetings:
• For the Sixteen Acres and East Forest Park neighborhoods: Tues., Dec. 13, 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Greenleaf Community Center at 1188 Parker St.
• For the Six Corners, Upper Hill, Old Hill, and Forest Park neighborhoods: Wed., Dec. 14, 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the J.C. Williams Community Center at 116 Florence St.
• For the Metro Center/downtown and South End neighborhoods: Thur., Dec. 15, 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the South End Middle School at 36 Margaret St.
• And, finally, on Thur., Jan 26, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at St. Anthony’s Social Center at 375 Island Pond Rd., ReBuild Springfield will present the master plan drawn up by Concordia, LLC, a planning and design firm firm hired by the group.
