The thing about preschoolers is they lack certain self-consciousness. This week, en route to Gym and Swim, Saskia rode in the stroller wearing jacket, bathing suit, pants, sparkly red shoes—and her goggles, although she knew she’d take them off since gym precedes swim.

The other moment I wish I’d photographed occurred a few nights ago. She emerged from the bathroom adorned with her “earphones,” otherwise known as a Q-tip dangling from inside each ear.

It’s impossible not to admire her commitment to ideas or fashion or many other things (these days, candy).

It’s National Adoption Month—and the 19th (today) is National Adoption Day. The thing about Saskia is she came into our lives with plenty of complexity. And she came with an incredible mama. I wish there were a bigger, better, more nuanced phrase to express the gratitude I feel that Saskia’s mama entrusted her to us than thank you.

I do believe I was waiting for Saskia for a very long time (I could almost say forever). Our entire family is better with her in it, that’s for sure. Today, I had to take a moment just to say to the ether how gigantically much I love her.
