Contemplative Clay • Through March 25

Clay strikes me as a primal medium for art — I mean, it’s almost older than dirt. Artists working in clay have an intimate relationship with their creations that isn’t possible with materials that don’t ooze, squish and bend. What I’m saying is, I like to read the intentions of each thumb swipe in a clay piece. So, this week I’m checking out Contemplative Clay by Viki Gable, a pro potter, teacher, and art therapist. She’s exhibiting her work at Springfield College’s William Blizzard Gallery through March 25, with a reception on March 24. — Kristin Palpini

Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project • Sunday

Folklorist and researcher Alan Lomax died in 2002, but his public archive of thousands of folk music recordings lives on. That huge library of songs is the basis for a show at the Parlor Room by Jayme Stone and fellow roots musicians, who want to “revive, recycle, and reimagine traditional music” in a concert that ranges from Bahamian sea shanties to African-American a cappella to fiddle tunes to ancient Appalachian ballads. At the Parlor Room in Northampton. Doors at 6:30 p.m. $10-$17 in advance; $20 at the door. — Hunter Styles
