The Montague Clean Energy Campaign kicks off this weekend with the Earth, Wind and Sun Fair. Just like any other seasonal fair, this one is chock full of fun activities and good food, but, in addition, everything is green-minded and aimed at harnessing clean energy. Attendees can try out alternative energy devices like mini-wind turbines (devices that operate on the same principles as windmills by converting the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy for the home), along with solar cells and hydropower generators. At this fair, instead of using the traditional mallet and bell system, test your strength by pedaling to power 600 watts of light. If you work up a hunger after cycling, you can bake something in a solar-powered oven. A geological tour of Turners Falls reveals the climate changes of the past in rock outcrops, inspiring speculation on the climate changes of today and the geological record they will leave behind for generations to come.
The fair itself is free, but commences a year of Montague’s efforts to raise money for renewable energy and energy efficiency.
