Lady Sasquatch sounds like a band that likes to goof around in the studio. Unconstrained by any one musical genre, the Feeding Hills quartet—Brandon Godbout, Mike “Figgy” Ferrigno, Dave Reynolds and Jordan Welner—layers samples atop organic sounds, playfully melding elements of electro-pop, hip-hop and alt rock to produce its own Sasquatchy blend.
The group also likes to mess around in interviews, as evidenced by its recent multi-person email exchange.
Valley Advocate: How did the band come together?
Welner: When I approached my mom about moving back home after the Marines in the summer of 2008, she responded, “The only way you’re living under my roof is if you start a band that incorporates indie pop electronic music and Southern hip-hop.” Anxious to escape the pressures of government employment, I complied with my mother’s request, reuniting with best high school friends Mike Ferrigno, Brandon Godbout and Dave Reynolds. Our moms are pretty cool until they start to suck.
What’s the songwriting process like?
Ferrigno: It’s like we all go into a bounce house armed with sock ’em boppers and brutally battle it out until one of us has to use the bathroom.
Can you tell me about your live “mash-ups and remixes”?
Ferrigno: For the live mash-ups we try and think like a DJ, using only the best parts of the songs. Sometimes we sample and manipulate the original recordings. Other times we recreate the parts ourselves. We almost always add our own vocals, synths, guitars, bass, electronic drums and live drums.
Anything Advocate readers should know about Lady Sasquatch?
If you were to try to visualize the Lady, some of her most prominent features are displayed in all four members of the band.
Jordan, a.k.a. Jdub, one of the group’s vocalists and [its] most talented rapper, makes up the muscle of the lady beast. His persistent daily routine of beat-making and songwriting is the drive, motivation and means by which the Lady keeps ideas fresh, original and moving forward. …
Mike, or Figgy as he is often called, is connected to the earbone. … His robot-like skill for taking chaotic noise, chopping it up slicing and tweaking and editing it with his arsenal of techno-electronics makes each listening experience unique and pleasing to the ear of any earbone, even ones as meticulous as Figgy’s.
…Brando, often adorned in mystic neckties and vintage footwear brings most of the Magic to Lady Sasquatch. His yin and yang philosophical five o’clock shadow showcases the Lady’s raw talent and charm that can electrify even the smallest of Sasquatch sightings.
Dave and both his crazy eyes have been called the mouth of the Lady, in the sense that they never stop moving, and can tell you all you need to know about the meaning and the message of Lady Sass and her music. It isn’t necessarily anything to do with the words that she uses in particular, but rather the way she moves her lips, and how the audible tones push past her spiky teeth leaving bite marks on anyone in earshot.
