As of this writing, the Black Moon is just an open room with the makings of a bar in one corner and a bare stage in another. There are no guitarists tuning up or customers shouting orders over a din—only the whirring of power tools. But by October, the space over Dunkin Donuts in Belchertown will be a full-fledged night spot ringing with funk, soul and rock 'n' roll.

The Black Moon was created by manager Sonya MacPhail to energize her town's nighttime scene. The club will be a welcome relief for Belchertown locals who crave live music but who are worn out by traveling to Northampton and Springfield. The Black Moon will offer seven nights and at least seven genres of live music every week in what MacPhail hopes will be an intimate, laid-back atmosphere.

Just how intimate? Well, that is yet to be seen, but the club is a month away from its opening date and already boasts a roster of artists that pack venues long established and more sizeable than the Black Moon's 1,500-square feet—artists such as Ray Mason, the Lonesome Brothers, Amity Front, Running With Karma, and newcomers Fiesta Brava. Black Moon will also offers a Monday night open mic (hosted by Eric Alan), Tuesday night jazz, and dancing on Thursdays. Other nights are focused on Americana, blues and comedy.

Black Moon's initiation is near. Kicking things off with a well-dressed bang, Unit 7 plays the grand opening, currently scheduled for Oct. 3, with plenty of horns and lots of hats. The impeccable funk and jazz ensemble is joined by brain-teaser hip-hop authority MC Mr. Napkins.

The Black Moon is located at 37 State St. in Belchertown. There is no phone number just yet, so for more information, visit www.myspace.com/blackmoonjazz.
