In Irishfolklore, Finn MacCool was a legendary warrior said to have created a group of islands to use as stepping stones to get to Scotland. But the legends never seem to mention that after retiring, he moved to Westfield to open a bar and grill.

Finn MacCool's is a major part of Westfield's college social scene, but don't write it off as a typical college bar. Sure, they have Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap, but they also offer a handful of brews from Paper City for the more discriminating palates.

Their busy schedule throughout the week is varied enough to offer something for everyone, rather than bog-standard college bar fare. On Mondays, musicians are welcome to drop by with their instruments and jam on open mic night. Tuesdays are dubbed "Terror Tuesdays," a friendly warning to pub-goers that they'll be hearing their favorite punk, hardcore and metal songs all night. "Whip It Out Wednesday" is their dance night, and "College Drop-Out Night" on Thursdays features drink specials and $1 jello shots.

On weekends, Finn MacCool's hosts live music from some of the Valley's favorite local acts. Owner Scott Lee (appropriately nicknamed "Ogre") has been a major player in the Springfield music scene, and knows how to book the bands people want. Holyoke rockers Stare Down the Sun just celebrated the release of their second album there on Nov. 17, and the release party for Noledge's new album will take place on Nov. 21. Check the bar's website, www.finnmaccools.net, for a full schedule of upcoming events or call (413) 562-0306.

There's also a full kitchen every night of the week, serving a wide selection of sandwiches, burgers and appetizers. Noteworthy offerings include Corona-battered shrimp, jalapeno bottle caps, and "The Finn": two open-faced burgers topped with chili and sautéed veggies. Come on, it's not as intimidating as it sounds.

Finn MacCool's is located at 154 Elm Street (Route 10) in Westfield, just minutes from the highway and within staggering distance of Westfield State College.
