Democrat Steve Kulik was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1992, representing one of the state's most rural districts, comprising Conway, Deerfield, Leverett, Montague, New Salem, Shutesbury, Sunderland, Wendell and Whately in Franklin County and Belchertown, Chesterfield, Goshen, Huntington, Pelham, Williamsburg and Worthington in Hampshire County. A progressive who is widely admired for his intelligence and preparedness for nuanced debates on Beacon Hill, Kulik is also popular with the sportsmen in his district. He receives a top rating annually from the Gun Owners' Action League of Massachusetts and the National Rifle Association. Kulik is a member of the Worthington Rod and Gun Club and the North Quabbin Anglers Association.

Kulik began his political career as a Worthington selectman in 1983, a seat he held until 1994. He is a past president of the Massachusetts Municipal Association and the Massachusetts Selectmen's Association.

In 2008, Kulik has championed efforts to bring broadband access to rural Western Mass. communities.
