Seventy-four-year-old Ray Gengenbach studied zoology at UMass in the ’50s. Although he didn’t complete his studies, he’s painted and drawn animals everywhere he’s been, from the Appalachicola National Forest near Sumatra, Florida, to the Baltimore Zoo and now-demolished agricultural barns at UMass (the Mullins Center stands there now). He has produced images of animals including rattlesnakes, toads, turtles, horses and elephants (“Dolly,” done in oil on canvas, is pictured). Many of his paintings, drawings and prints are on display this month in Ray Gengenbach Animals.
