Writer and photographer Mary Nelen spends a lot of time thinking about food. As a “locavore,” she only eats food grown within 100 miles of her home in the Valley. She contributes to the Valley Advocate and blogs about ways to eat locally, and her new photography exhibit, Fetish: Food and Flowers, speaks to her fascination with food.
The exhibit catalogues her experiences as a locavore with images of locally foraged food, like wild strawberries, and exotic flowers photographed at a spring flower show. The 100-mile diet, popularized in a novel by Canadian writers Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon, is part of a national movement supporting local food as healthier, and better for local economies and the environment. An opening party for the exhibit will be held May 2, 4-6 p.m.
May 2-31, Wistariahurst Gallery and Museum, 238 Cabot St. Holyoke, (413) 322-5660, http://wistariahurst.org.
