Andy Warhol may be best known for his iconic pop art creations, but right now at UMass’ University Gallery you can see many examples of an entirely different body of Warhol’s creative work. The gallery has acquired 100 Warhol Polaroids and 50 black and white silver gelatin prints dating to the years 1970-1987 for an exhibition called The Minox and The Big Shot. Remarkably, the gallery reports, Warhol took around 100,000 photographs in that era. (Including one of Ted Kennedy, pictured.)
You can also see a related exhibition, Connecting the Dots… The Warhol Legacy: Tom Friedman, Ellen Gallagher, Vik Munoz, Rob Pruitt, featuring work by four contemporary artists “who explore themes and ideas central to Andy Warhol’s artistic practice.”
Through Dec. 13, University Gallery, Fine Arts Center, UMass-Amherst, (413) 545-3670, www.umass.edu/fac/universitygallery.
