Stagestruck: A Shaky Shakespeare

Shakespeare & Company’s King Lear, the first show to open on its Lenox campus in a year and a half, marks another return of live theater after the long intermission. It’s also the inaugural production in the troupe’s new outdoor amphitheater, a handsome addition to the company’s stages that brings its history full circle. So it’s especially disappointing to report that this production falls so short of anticipation.

Stagestruck: Summer Theater Preview – New & Different

I’m looking at my summer theater calendar and counting over 60 productions due up over the next three lively months in the Valley and beyond. Some dozen world premieres, along with even more regional premieres, stand alongside classics from Ibsen to Albee, not to mention Shakespeare. Quite a few scripts wrestle with hot-button contemporary issues, including climate change, racial identity, global conflict, and guns.
